Gary Glitter

Gary Glitter is a vile man who engaged in unspeakable acts. It is entirely right that he be required to register with the authorities, and that they should keep tabs on him.

It is however unreasonable that the gutter press continue to hound and pursue him incessantly. It is unreasonable that he be plastered across newspaper covers and television news bulletins destroying any prospect of a private life.

Glitter has served his sentence, and the best thing he can do now is fade away andlive out the rest of his life in obscurity. The corollary of this is that he must be allowed to do so.

The authorities have a role to play in protecting society from Glitter, the press do not.

I agree. Where is the righteousness of the press when it comes to the scores of other convicted paedophiles who've been released back into socitety?

His acts are despicable. His only possible salvation is to admit to himself that what he's done is a horid crime and that he needs extensive medical help. Like most of these molesters, though, they see their acts as ones of love. Disgusting to the rest of us, but that's the reality of it.

If Glitter could say, "I'm sick and I don't want to do this any more", and begin treatment, we'd have one less monster on the loose and possibly on visible example to others like him that they, also, can stop.

History doesn't bode well for this scenario, but I'd like to see it. The righteous hounding of the press and public will change only the location of the next attack on a child.
